THE public yesterday began suggesting the poetry that could motivate athletes to greatness at the London 2012 Games.
They are being asked for ideas of inspiring lines that will feature on a wall inside the athletes village in Stratford, east London.
The selected poems from the Winning Words project could strike a similar note as the inspirational words of “If” by Rudyard Kipling, which adorn the players’ entrance to the Centre Court at the Wimbledon tennis championships.
Players see the lines of Kipling’s 1899 masterpiece – “If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster and treat those two impostors just the same”.
Nominations can be made online – at the website www.winningwordspoetry.com – and will be judged by a panel including Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy.
