Anti-cuts march sees 2,000 take to the streets of Liverpool
A PROTEST against public sector cuts saw more than 2,000 take to the city’s streets.
Public sector workers, students and community activists marched on Saturday to object to government cuts to public sector jobs and services and the increase in student tuition fees.
The Liverpool city centre protest passed off loudly, but peacefully, and started at the Metropolitan cathedral.
Speakers from Unite, the National Union of Teachers, Unison EC and the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers addressed the crowd.
The chairman of the rally and president of Merseyside Trade Union Councils, Alec McFadden, said: “This was a very positive march and rally, we have the support of the community.
“Both major churches in Merseyside, the students and trade unionists march side by side, all rejecting the policies and cuts of this Government of millionaires, who claim ‘we are all in this together’.
“They don’t know what it’s like to live on benefits or struggle on low pay.”
