Urgent Liverpool grit bin shipment delayed ... due to bad weather

A SHIPMENT of grit bins, en route to Liverpool to help deal with the cold snap, has been delayed due to the bad weather.

The council said the bins had been ordered after numerous requests from residents and councillors.

In some areas of the city, there is only one bin for an entire ward, while others have several. See our grit bin map for Merseyside by clicking here.

Tuebrook and Stoneycroft councillor Steve Radford said the entire area of the L13 and L6 postcodes had to try to make do with only one, despite steep hills and major routes through the ward.

But when he pressed officers as to when he could expect a delivery, he was told the road conditions meant the consignment could not make it across the Pennines.

Highways manager Andy Barr’s email to Cllr Radford stated: “I can advise that we have had a large number of requests for additional grit bins since the current cold snap has been with us and we are just in the process of collating the overall number of requests and these will be assessed and placed into priority order shortly.

“We do not have any grit bins in stock currently and are awaiting a delivery from Halifax, but this has been delayed due to the weather conditions.”

In recent weeks, in preparation for the cold weather, the council has been buying in grit and said it is confident it has enough.

After major disruptions last year when the council ran out , it has now got around 2,000 tonnes in storage.
