Merseyside transport project funding slashed by two thirds

FUNDING for transport projects in Merseyside has been slashed by two thirds.

Merseyside will receive just £11.4m in funding from the Department for Transport in 2011, but received £32m this year.

Cllr Mark Dowd, the chairman of transport authority Merseytravel, said the cut amounted to financial savagery.

The Labour councillor said colleagues who wanted new stations costing £7m each in Town Meadow, Wirral and Maghull, Sefton would be disappointed.

When the figures are broken down, only £1.9m will be available to the transport authority to spend on new capital projects.

All projects are now under review.

Cllr Dowd said:“Never in our most pessimistic forecasts did we anticipate such a crippling and savage cut.”
