A NEW £30million cruise liner terminal will be built in Southampton, it has been announced.

The building at Southampton Docks will be the fifth cruise facility in the city and will accomodate the largest cruise ships when it is completed in 2013.

The move comes as the Liverpool Daily Post leads Liverpool's campaign to allow ships to start and finish cruises on the River Mersey, something Southampton has strongly opposed. Click here to see our Get On Board minisite or sign our online petition.

The port's owners - Associated British Ports - said the new facility will strengthen Southampton's position as the largest turnaround cruise ship operation in northern Europe.

Doug Morrison, port director of ABP Southampton, said: “Investing in this type of infrastructure helps create jobs and will bring prosperity to the city and surrounding economy.

“We are very proud of our port here in Southampton and the building of a fifth cruise terminal will cement our position at the forefront of the European cruise industry.”

The £30 million building should become operational in 2013.
