BIRDS have been discovered contaminated by the oil spill at Liverpool’s docks system.
A major clean-up operation is now under way after around 250 tonnes of heavy fuel oil escaped after a boat hit part of a dock at the weekend.
The RSPCA has so far removed nine “oiled” swans and one gull, while another eight swans have so far eluded capture because they are still flying.
The birds will be taken to a wildlife centre to have the oil removed. Meanwhile, the Port of Liverpool said the oil should be cleaned up by this weekend.
