Unique John Lennon coin to be sold at charity auction

A GOLD coin minted to honour one of Liverpool’s most famous sons will be available to buy in a charity auction.

The 22-carat coin shows John Lennon complete with trademark round glasses.

The coin, which has a face value of £5, is unique – so the new owner will have bagged themselves a true piece of music and monetary history.

It is the first time a pop star has been honoured on one of the Royal Mint’s Alderney coins which are normally reserved for figures such as Winston Churchill or Florence Nightingale. But a public poll in which more than 30,000 votes were cast saw overwhelming support for the former Beatle in what would have been his 70th birthday year.

The coin is due to be auctioned in June and all the proceeds will go to the Alder Hey Children’s Hospital Imagine Appeal which benefits sick children and their families across the North West. Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono is a patron of the appeal and said she was “thrilled” the commemorative coin was being donated to the West Derby hospital.
