BBC rapped over portrayal of Steptoe actor Harry H Corbett’s marriage

THE BBC re-edited a programme about Steptoe and Son star Harry H Corbett after the brother of his second wife said it was unfair to her.

The Curse of Steptoe starred Liverpool actor Jason Isaacs as Corbett and Phil Davis as co-star Wilfrid Brambell.

Maureen Corbett’s brother complained that scenes in the show implied his sister’s relationship with the actor was a casual one.

The BBC’s Editorial Standards Committee ruled the show was “inaccurate and unfair”.

It also acknowledged the BBC had re-edited the show but said it had not done enough and the portrayal of the relationship remained “ambiguous” and was still unfair and inaccurate.

In May, 2009, the ESC found the relationship between the couple as portrayed on screen did not match the facts.
