Solicitors study challenge to Eddie Gilfoyle murder release ‘gag’

THE Parole Board was last night considering how to respond to a legal challenge asking for a gag on a Merseyside killer to be lifted.

Eddie Gilfoyle is now a free man, after he was released on licence from Sudbury jail just before Christmas, after 18 years behind bars.

The 49-year-old was sentenced to life for murdering his pregnant wife, Paula, in their garage in Upton, in 1992.

In a hugely high-profile case, Gilfoyle always claimed a miscarriage of justice, insisting Paula had committed suicide by hanging herself.

Strict conditions of his release mean Gilfoyle is unable to discuss his case in the media.

Last week, solicitors for the Wirral man spoke of their determination to push for a judicial review to overturn the ruling.

And last night the Parole Board confirmed they had received correspondence from solicitors, Birnberg Peirce, acting for Gilfoyle.

A spokesman said: “We have received a notice of action that Mr Gilfoyle’s representatives intend to challenge considerations of his licence, namely the media restrictions on this case. This will be passed to our legal team ahead of our response.”
