Charity founder receives MBE for work with cancer care in Africa

A FOUNDER member of a Merseyside-based charity said she was “choked up” after being awarded an MBE.

Lesley Phipps was named in the diplomatic and overseas section of the 2011 New Year’s Honours list for her work on palliative cancer care with charity Hospice Africa.

The 63-year-oldwas nominated by her fellow trustees.

She said: “I just choked up when I received the letter, I couldn’t believe it.

“Seeing what these people go through is very hard, but it makes you more determined then ever to go out and raise money.”

Having spent nearly 30 years working in social care, at the Royal Liverpool Hospital and later with the Emergency Duty Team for Liverpool City Council, Lesley helped found Hospice Africa in 1993.
