Mixed response to plans to extend caravan club into Southport’s Victoria Park

PLANS to extend Southport Caravan Club onto part of the town’s historic Victoria Park have received a mixed reaction.

The proposals – up for discussion at tonight’s Southport Area Committee meeting – could see up to 100 hard-standing caravan pitches built on the Weld Road end of the site.

The move would see the “Archery Ground” taken over by the camping area, which would move alongside the model boating lake and miniature railway.

Three options are up for discussion – 48, 61 or 100 pitches.

While concern was expressed at the prospect of the popular play area being invaded by caravans, the scheme was seen by some as beneficial to Southport’s economy.

Phil King, former tourism director of Sefton Council, said it was important people had enough recreational area, but suggested the Caravan Club could help fund a new play area as a compromise.
