Last bid to save West Kirby hotel scheme thrown out

A LAST ditch attempt to bring a boutique hotel to a Wirral beauty spot was thrown out by the council last night.

At the end of last year Wirral’s ruling cabinet was told to think again about scrapping the controversial plan for the Sail on a car park in West Kirby overlooking the marine lake.

The cabinet was asked to consider further consultation on car parking issues, and at the time Lib-Dems voted with Labour and against their Conservative coalition partners to take the project back to cabinet.

Last night Lib-Dem leader Simon Holbrook proposed giving the developers more time to resolve problems highlighted by the council with their scheme and was backed by Lib Dem cabinet members.

However, their Conservative coalition partners voted against it and a proposal that the previous cabinet decision be re-affirmed was instead approved.

The decision was condemned by Labour group leader Steve Foulkes who said it was a “missed opportunity”.

He said: “We are throwing away the chance to have a boutique hotel by the people behind the incredibly successful London Carriage Works.”
