Liverpool unemployment flat as jobless recovery continues

THE job market in Liverpool is remaining stable although nationally there are concerns about the weakness of the jobless recovery.

Official figures published yesterday showed a very slight fall of 72 people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance across Liverpool city region as the unemployment rate remained at 5.3%.

But economists are concerned that there are few signs of job creation across the country.

In Liverpool city region there were 50,325 claimants last month, almost exactly the same as six months earlier while the last four months have seen movements of 0.5% or less.

This stability has maintained the level achieved after large falls in the first half of 2010, and the city region’s claimant count is 10% lower than a year ago. Wirral performed the strongest last year with a 19% reduction in claimants although Sefton only saw a 4% drop.

Nationally there was a 9% fall year-on-year although last month saw only a very small drop of 4,100 people to 1.46m claimants nationally last month.
