Red Balloon provides sanctuary for bully victims

OPENED last year, the Liverpool centre was the fourth in a UK network of Red Balloon learner centres, under a project pioneered by former teacher Dr Carrie Herbert.

She has warned that terrified bullying victims are slipping through the education net.

The 15-place sanctuary for bullied children too afraid to go to school is housed in a former private children’s home.

The school takes in severely bullied pupils, aged 11 to 17, who are already out of school and missing education from across Merseyside and from diverse backgrounds

Although those who attend have access to the National Curriculum, children also have one-to-one support and counselling.

The centre was built in memory of murdered toddler James Bulger.

And, during fundraising before its launch, his mother, Denise Fergus, won the backing of Liverpool FC stars, including captain Steven Gerrard.
