OVER-THE-COUNTER medicine nearly saw a Merseyside police officer sacked after testing positive for drugs.
The officer was the only serving member of staff to test positive for drugs in two years, according to figures released under the Freedom of Information Act.
But a second test cleared the officer of any wrong-doing and found the original failure was down to medicine that can be bought at any chemists.
In total, 34 Merseyside officers were tested for drugs between September, 2008, and September, 2010, according to figures obtained by Jane’s Police Review.
With the failed test result cancelled, it means no Merseyside officer tested positive.
In comparison, the Met Police tested more than 2,000 officers and found 11 had drugs in their system, while Greater Manchester Police tested 1,164 officers but also saw no-one fail.
