VASILY PETRENKO will take the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra (RLPO) to Wirral for the first time to mark Birkenhead School’s 150th anniversary with a huge open air concert.

Originally from St Petersburg, Russia, Petrenko has lived in Birkenhead since becoming chief conductor at the RLPO in 2006.

He says he is excited about the prospect of performing on his adopted home turf, and hopes it could be “a first step towards a Wirral orchestral life”.

Petrenko said: “Many things excite me, first of all I think it is very important to do concerts in schools for a young audience, and I think it’s great to have this opportunity.

“Secondly, I really love to do the concerts near Liverpool, but not in Liverpool, and it’s a beautiful site here – it’s always special to perform when you can see some nature.

“And, thirdly, I can walk to the concert and from the concert.”

The event, on June 18, will feature the full orchestra performing work by Holst, Tchaikovsky and Schonberg.

Advance bookings for the show will enjoy a reduced entry price.
