Business warning over tunnel toll rises

BUSINESSMAN and member of Merseytravel's tunnel advisory board Phil Fleming told the Daily Post the increase would be damaging to local businesses and he had been lobbying hard to get councillors not to agree to the rise.

He said: “We had not been told anything about this and they have rushed it through.”

Wirral West MP Esther McVey said it was “the wrong decision at the wrong time” and said it would hit small businesses and their staff.

She said: “It’s unacceptable but it’s not just about the increase for people who run cars. For people who run businesses and have HGVs the toll rise is astronomical and unaffordable.

“Businesses are already having a difficult time and this is the wrong way forward.”

Wirral Chamber of Commerce chief executive Ken Davies said the toll rises were “inappropriate” at a time when businesses were struggling.
