Curtis Warren must wait on final appeal against £1m drug conviction

LIVERPOOL drugs baron Curtis Warren will have to wait for a ruling on his final appeal against a £1m cannabis plot conviction.

After a day-and-a-half of legal arguments in front of London's Privy Council, the fate of the Toxteth- born 47-year-old rests in the hands of five Law Lords who could take months to come to a decision.

Warren's legal team have argued evidence Jersey Police used to build their case should never have gone before a jury, because it was obtained illegally.

And, at the end of yesterday's hearing, the Channel Island force announced that an independent inquiry into the conduct of their officers has finally been launched – 3½ years after Warren was arrested.

Chief Officer Mike Bowron, who has only been in post a few months, has asked Hampshire Police to spearhead the inquiry looking at whether any officer should face disciplinary action.

Much of the evidence used to convict Warren was based on recordings taken from a bug placed in a hire car, driven by accomplice John Welsh from France to Holland despite Jersey being told by their foreign counterparts they would not allow a listening device to be used within their borders.
