LEADERS of all the city council’s political parties will join together at a major anti-cuts rally planned for Sunday.
The event will be lead by Liverpool’s Lord Mayor and the leaders of the ruling Labour administration.
But the Liberal Democrats, Liberal and Green groups are also due to attend.
The decision to unite against cuts, which will see the council forced to make savings of up to £100m this year, came after weeks of crisis meetings in which all parties put political differences aside to try to work out where the cuts could be made.
The march will begin at the Anglican Cathedral, which in recent weeks has played its own prominent role in protests against the Lib-Dem-Tory coalition’s spending reductions.
Crowds are expected to gather outside the cathedral at 1pm on Sunday before marching to St George’s Hall.
Under the banner “One City, One Voice”, leading figures from each group will address the crowd.
Council leader Cllr Joe Anderson is to speak and it is understood Lib-Dem leader Cllr Warren Bradley will also take to the microphone.
Cllr Anderson said: “I hope hundreds of Liverpool families will turn out on Sunday to support the demand for a fair deal for Liverpool.
“The campaign against government cuts is one we must win if we are to safeguard local jobs and services.
“That’s why everyone should join together in one voice for Liverpool. The city has some of the poorest areas in Britain – yet the government has hit us the hardest with cuts.
“The massive £91m we are being forced to axe from our services this year will mean real hardship for thousands of Liverpool families.
“Sunday will be the people’s rally for a fair deal and to tell the Government to return the millions needed to fund essential services for our children, the elderly and the vulnerable.”
