THE Government should honour a pledge to define in law the Military Covenant, MPs were told.
Shadow defence secretary Jim Murphy said what the Covenant includes should be established by legislation, giving servicemen and women greater rights and protections.
Mr Murphy said: “There’s a tangible feeling up and down the country that the moral bond between the nation and the forces could be strengthened.”
Opening an Opposition Day debate on the Covenant, Mr Murphy said it was “the unspoken contract between the nation and those who serve our country with incomparable courage”, adding: “As our country continues to change, these values should be constant.” Mr Murphy warned of “growing anger” at the way service personnel were treated, after officers, including one serving on the Afghan frontline, were sacked by email.
