LIVERPOOL Hope University has become the first in the city to publicly rule out charging maximum tuition fees.
From 2012, the Government will permit the current £3,290 cap on tuition fees to rise to a maximum £9,000.
The prospect of fees tripling sparked student protests across the city and in Westminster, and union chiefs warned the spiralling charges would price people out of higher education and have a “disastrous” effect on Liverpool’s economy.
But last night Liverpool Hope University said that, although it was still “considering” its final policy on fees, it ruled out charging the maximum £9,000.
The university’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Gerald Pillay, has also told staff “it is not fair to transfer all of government debt to graduate debt”.
