Merseyside schoolgirl to undergo eight hour operation on her spine
A BRAVE Merseyside schoolgirl is undergoing major surgery on her back after a condition left her spine at a 90-degree angle.
Ellen Wagstaff, 12, from Formby, was diagnosed with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis 10 months ago, and since then her condition has rapidly deteriorated.
Next month, she will undergo an eight-hour operation that will open up her spine and fuse it to a piece of metal to keep it straight.
Despite her fear of the surgery, the Formby High pupil is asking people to sponsor her to get up as soon as possible after her operation to raise money for children less fortunate than her.
Ellen said: “My condition came totally out of the blue, but I’m trying to make it into something positive. I realised how lucky I am, because there are children out there with no surgeons or hospitals and they are suffering in silence.”
Ellen is raising money for the World Child Cancer Charity, which helps children around the world who are seriously ill. To sponsor Ellen, visit www.justgiving.com/Efrances
