University of Liverpool to train police officers in football safety

THE University of Liverpool is to play a leading role in training police officers across Europe to improve crowd safety and security at football matches.

The European Commission and UEFA have awarded £1m to develop and deliver an international training programme for 250 of Europe’s’ most senior police officers involved in policing Champions League, Europa League matches and international football tournaments. And the University of Liverpool will play a leading role in the scheme.

Dr Clifford Stott, a senior lecturer at the University of Liverpool and one of the UK’s leading academic experts on the psychology and policing of football crowds, said: “This programme utilises Liverpool’s research expertise in crowd psychology and policing. It is unique in terms of quality, approach, participation and partnerships.”
