HMS Liverpool makes final visit to port of her birth before being scrapped (VIDEO, GALLERY)

THE Royal Navy’s HMS Liverpool made her way up the River Mersey and back to where she was built.

In the final visit to the city for the ship before she is decommissioned next year, she came alongside the Liver Building, at the Pier Head, where the Lord Mayor, Cllr Hazel Williams, was welcomed onboard by officers and crew.

HMS Liverpool was build by Cammell Laird, in Birkenhead, and was launched in 1980.

She has been on operations all over the world from supporting operations in Iraq to busting drug smugglers in the Caribbean.

The ship is due to deploy again later this year, but before heading out again she will be open to the public, who are welcome to look around from midday until 4pm on Saturday and Sunday, while members of the crew are taking part in a variety of engagements in the city. Today they are due to march through the streets of Liverpool as honoured freemen, granted to them in 1983.

The route will take them from Chapel Street to Exchange Flags.
