Employment tribunals continue to rise

THE number of employment tribunals is continuing to rise as the recession bites, according to Merseyside law firm Maxwell Hodge.

It has dealt with high numbers of tribunal claims in recent months, and this is reflected nationally with the latest Tribunal Service figures.

The figures reveal that employment tribunals, which peaked at the end of 2009, continued to rise in 2010.

This has prompted a review of the employment tribunal process, where it is proposed that a claimant would have to pay a fee in order to submit a tribunal claim.

Laura Chalkley, employment law specialist at Maxwell Hodge, said: “The Tribunal Service has revealed a continued rise in claims.

“There is no doubt that the economic crisis has fuelled the rise in tribunal claims, however many will also blame the increase in employment legislation and the publicising of high profile, high pay-out cases for discrimination.”
