A MERSEYSIDE man has spoken of his relief to be back in Liverpool after being caught up in the Libyan terror.
Chemical engineer Patrick Devaney was flown out of the war-torn country by his employers who got their workers on a rescue flight.
Yesterday, back home in Allerton, he said: “I’m glad to get out. It’s nice to be home and safe.”
Patrick, 26, has been based in Libya for two years working for a chemical manufacturing company outside Libya’s capital, Tripoli.
He said they were away from the main cities where Col Muammar Gaddafi’s forces clashed with anti-Government protesters, but, as information came in about the extent of the conflict, the atmosphere among workers became increasingly tense.
He said: “My own experience was very sheltered from all of the things occurring around the country. We never saw any of the horrible things going on in Tripoli or Benghazi.
“We spent the whole time trying to keep everyone’s spirits up as well as our own but we were following developments on the television and were getting reports from people we knew around the country.
“I wouldn’t say it was frightening or I felt fearful, but I would say the situation was tense and people were feeling it and it was getting worse day-by-day.”
