Detective accused of having “inappropriate relationship” with rape victim due in court

A POLICE officer accused of having a relationship with a rape victim is to appear in court.

Detective Constable John Cragg, of Formby, has been charged with two counts of misconduct in a public office. The 41-year-old, who resigned from Lancashire Constabulary in November, worked in Blackpool on the specialist Awaken team.

The unit was set up to deal specifically with cases of rape and sexual assault. It is claimed Mr Cragg began an inappropriate relationship with a woman in her 30s who was a rape complainant.

Last night, a spokesman for Lancashire Police confirmed Mr Cragg was summoned to appear before Wirral Magistrates on March 23.

A statement issued by the constabulary read: “Following consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service, a 41-year- old man has been charged with two counts of misconduct in a public office.”

The offences are alleged to have taken place between August, 09, and November, 2010.
