Seven week old baby scalded by hot chocolate drink
A SEVEN-WEEK-OLD baby is recovering in hospital after being scalded by a chocolate drink in a fast food restaurant.
Little Tyler James Houghton was in his pram at McDonald’s on Church Street, Liverpool city centre, when his face, neck and upper body were doused with the hot liquid.
The baby was rushed to Alder Hey children’s hospital in a police car, and was due to be seen by specialists in skin graft treatment today.
Mother Leanne Ward, 29, spoke to the Daily Post following her traumatic Friday afternoon.
She said: “It was about 1pm, and I was in town with my sister Adele, my 13-month-old son Riley, and Tyler, and we went into McDonald’s to get something to eat. Adele went to get the food and I went to find a seat. I was just getting to the table when this man went in front of me and sat there.
“I said ‘sorry love, those are taken,’ and when he turned round the drink fell off his tray and into Tyler’s pram.”
Leanne described how her baby boy then screamed out loud as the scalding drink splattered his face, neck, arms and torso.
The man, described as tall with grey hair, apologised as the distraught mother shouted for help from customers and restaurant staff.
Merseyside Police confirmed they were making enquiries to “establish the circumstances surrounding the incident”.
Tyler’s father, David Houghton, 29, rushed to the hospital to be with his wife and son.
The couple, who live in Kirkby and also have a five-year-old daughter, spent the weekend going back and to from the hospital to see their baby, who had to be given the super strong painkiller morphine when he was admitted onto the burns unit.
A spokeswoman for McDonald’s said the firm were assisting police with enquiries.
She added: “Our thoughts are naturally with Leanne and her family at this distressing time, and we wish Tyler a full and speedy recovery.”
