Revised Kirkby regeneration plans approved by Knowsley Council

PLANS for a major regeneration scheme in a Merseyside town centre were approved.

The proposals for Kirkby, which are dominated by a new Tesco superstore, followed the failure of the previous Destination Kirkby scheme, which controversially included a new stadium for Everton FC.

When that project was rejected following a public inquiry, Knowsley Council put together a new plan – without the stadium – with Tesco through its regeneration subsidiary Spenhill.

The new plan includes a 14,000 sq m Tesco superstore, more than 28,500 sq m of new shops, a new health centre, library, and bus station. An estimated 800 jobs will be created.

A special planning committee meeting on Friday approved the £200m scheme, with 20 votes in favour and only two against.
