Water burst to 117-year-old city pipe

A BURST water pipe caused chaos by cutting off the supply to thousands of Liverpool homes.

The 117-year-old cast iron pipe fractured in the early hours of yesterday morning.

A stretch of Cherry Lane, Walton, was closed as workmen excavated.

Water supplies to homes were cut off between 5am and 7am in Anfield, Walton, Tuebrook and Bootle.

United Utilities said engineers re-zoned the water supplies and apologised for the set back.

The road is likely to be closed until the end of the week.
