Pupils at independent Aigburth school Auckland College given wrong GCSE results

A LIVERPOOL private school has dismissed its exams officer after discovering students were given the wrong GCSE results.

The blunder was uncovered at Auckland College, a fee paying independent school in Aigburth.

Principal of the 109-pupil school Anthony Akaraonye stressed he had moved swiftly to rectify the “anomalies”.

But one angry parent last night said she was weighing up a compensation claim against the college whose Upper School fees are advertised as £7,500 a year.

A disciplinary probe found its exams officer was at fault and parents have been told he has been dismissed for “his failure to properly administer examination entries and records of results”.

There is no suggestion of any deliberate wrongdoing but the errors saw around six pupils given lower GCSE grades than they should in various subjects this summer– another five were issued with higher grades than they deserved.

All 21 GCSE students taking the exams last summer have had to wait for certificates to be issued by exam boards due to the administrative errors which included wrong names and dates of birth being processed.

Although all pupils have now received their correct grades, due to the errors they are still waiting for ICT certificates to arrive.

With wife Gillian, Mr Akaraonye set up the school for children from birth to 18 in 1999 to offer smaller class sizes and “a more personal touch”.

Since the anomalies came to light in December, Mr Akaraonye said the school had brought in extra staff and reviewed procedures “so this never happens again”.

At no stage had the college “attempted to hide” the problem and every parent at the school and exam boards were informed.

And he stressed the slight grade and point score variations had “not affected” college places the students had since secured.
