Call for Merseyside to back drive for Royal Commission review on policing

MERSEYSIDE’S rank-and-file police union today called on MPs to back a drive for a Royal Commission on the future of policing.

The Merseyside Police Federation, which represents officers up to the rank of superintendent, is pushing for a complete review on policing.

Its secretary last night attacked “headline-seeking politicians” who have failed in public promises to improve the service and railed against “piecemeal reform and failed experiments”.

The Merseyside force is facing £61m of cuts to police budgets thanks to the coalition Government’s austerity drive, and is likely to lose nearly 900 officers and 1,000 staff by 2015.

It will be the worst-hit area in the country.

With experts predicting crime is likely to rise on the back of the cuts and the remaining officers unsure about their future roles, the Federation has called on the public of Merseyside to have their say.

They want people to contact their MP to back an Early Day Motion which has been tabled in the House of Commons.
