Warren Bradley years at Liverpool council never far from controversy as Lib-Dem leader fought off rivals

QUESTIONS about Daniel Bradley’s nomination as a candidate in the elections were only raised when he saw his name in the paper.

Before that, Daniel says, he knew nothing of standing for election in the Labour-controlled Central ward.

He strenuously denied putting himself forward, saying our reporter should “speak to my dad” when his name was made public in early April.

A week later, having had time to reflect, Daniel was still adamant he would not be in the running.

He accepts his name will now go on the ballot paper but has no intention of campaigning or putting himself in the political spotlight.

His father meanwhile has had a turbulent few years in local politics.

The Liberal Democrat leader has never been far from controversy ever since he replaced Mike Storey as Liverpool council leader in 2005.

The dad-of-two, a firefighter based at Toxteth fire station, made a promising start, resolving planning rows with the Royal Liverpool Hospital and Alder Hey hospital.

But the highly controversial decision by the council to axe the popular Mathew Street festival for health and safety reasons in 2007 was the start of a difficult few years for Cllr Bradley.
