TEACHERS have called for public sector workers to stage general strikes this autumn amid rows over pensions and funding cuts.
As delegates at the National Union of Teachers (NUT) annual conference in Harrogate passed a resolution to ballot for a walkout over the Government’s pensions changes, there were suggestions that wider action will be necessary.
Unions are concerned that the plans will leave teachers paying more, working longer and receiving less when they retire.
An amendment to the pensions resolution stated that the NUT believes a one-day strike “will only be the start of the battle”.
It adds that industrial action would be strengthened if the TUC called co-ordinated action, starting with a one-day public sector general strike in the autumn.
