THE chief executive of Liverpool Biennial has announced his resignation.

Lewis Biggs, who was also founding director of the event, has quit after 10 years at the helm of the festival.

A recruitment process has already begun to find his replacement.

Mr Biggs, who was formerly a director of Tate Liverpool, said: “In little more than a decade, Liverpool Biennial has become one of the best reviewed and attended arts events in Britain.

"I am proud to have led the Biennial as it has grown and developed its artistic reputation and audience.”

Research by The Mersey Partnership found it attracted 628,000 visitors last year, who spent £27.2m, which is lower than the 2008 Capital of Culture Year but a 50% increase since 2006.

Mr Biggs said: “Liverpool Biennial 2012 will have the scale and quality to involve and delight visitors, and will inspire the next generation through commissioning new work from the world’s leading artists.
