Liverpool service to remember victims of the Lusitania tragedy

A WREATH was cast on to the River Mersey to commemorate the 96th anniversary of the Lusitania tragedy.

The Liverpool liner was sunk by a German U-boat in 1915 causing the deaths of 1,201 people on board.

A memorial service held on Saturday saw prayers read in memory of the victims of what remains one of the world’s gravest shipping disasters.

The Cunard vessel, carrying 1,962 passengers and crew on its weekly New York to Liverpool route, was off the coast of southern Ireland when she was hit by a torpedo.

The 31,550-tonne vessel sank below the waves in just 18 minutes.

The Reverend Sue Lucas officiated at the act of remembrance on the city’s waterfront by the Maritime Museum.

A bible reading was given before a wreath and flowers were cast onto the River Mersey.
