WIRRAL’S Lib-Dem group last night met to decide which party – if any – they will support to form an administration to lead the council.
The Lib-Dems have met with both Labour and the Conservatives following the elections when Labour became the largest group, increasing their tally of seats to 29.
The recent defection of a Lib-Dem to Labour ranks has helped the party reach 30 seats, but still four short of an overall majority.
Meanwhile, the Conservatives remain on 27 seats and the Lib-Dems have just nine – yet hold the balance of power.
Last night’s meeting follows discussions between their new leadership team of Tom Harney and his deputy Dave Mitchell and both the other parties. Labour have submitted a motion of no confidence in the council’s Tory leader, Jeff Green, but will need either the outright support of the Lib-Dems or for the smallest party to abstain in order for it to succeed.
