Floral memorials to crash victims on Knowsley roads could be banned

FLORAL tributes to crash victims on busy Merseyside roads could be barred over health and safety fears.

Knowsley council, which is proposing the ban, said the memorials to those who had perished on its roads were becoming “permanent shrines” and put both the people who placed them and drivers at risk.

If agreed by the council’s cabinet tomorrow, the policy warns “older tributes were deteriorating and falling into the path of vehicles travelling along a high-speed carriageway”.

Knowsley would be the first Merseyside council to impose the ban, which would be particularly aimed at Knowsley Expressway and Speke Boulevard.

On the two roads, which carry thousands of vehicles a day, an “outright prohibition” is proposed.

Merseyside RoadPeace campaigner Pauline Fielding said she could see there could be safety issues connected to memorials, but they were important to bereaved families.
