Staff at Merseyside HMRC offices stage walkout

THOUSANDS of staff from HM Revenue and Customs across Merseyside are set to take more industrial action tomorrow after staging a walkout.

Workers left their desks at 4pm today in protest against new rules which unions say make it easier to sack staff who go off sick.

Frank Doran, of the Public and Commercial Services union, was at the Triad Building, in Bootle, where around 1,000 people joined the action.

He said: "This is a way for the Government to try and get rid of staff on the cheap."

A spokesman for the department said talks with unions were underway to try and resolve the dispute with minimum disruption.
