COUNCILLORS approved plans for a mental health care centre on a derelict car showroom in Liverpool’s Edge Lane.
The facility, which will be on the former Ian Skelly site, will have 85 in-patient beds.
It forms part of an overall masterplan which will see another inpatient unit created on the former Walton General Hospital site.
The total cost is estimated at around £52m.
They are part of a scheme to modernise mental health services in Merseyside.
Mersey Care project director John Doyle said: “We see these new facilities as a significant improvement for everyone who needs to inpatient care and treatment.”
It is hoped the mental health centre will be open for patients by 2013.
