177 Liverpool inner city homes to get £14m development boost

Councillor Ann O'Byrne takes a walk down Arnside Road in Kensington

ROWS of shuttered-up Victorian homes will be transformed as part of a £14m scheme to breathe new life into inner-city areas of Liverpool.

The city council is seeking a developer to refurbish a total of 177 vacant council-owned properties in the Kensington, Granby and Wavertree regeneration areas.

It represents a U-turn for the council because one of the streets affected – Arnside Road, in Edge Hill – was originally earmarked for demolition under the controversial NewHeartlands scheme.

But, after the Government withdrew millions of pounds of funding for the programme last year, the council was forced to seek an alternative.

It is now looking for one or more developers to finance the rebuild and refurbishment of the existing homes in Arnside Road, along with those in two other zones in Granby and the Picton Road area of Wavertree, which have been derelict for years.
