A FORMER school sports hall will become a centre of excellence for badminton, thanks to a £250k grant.
St Helens Council will now invest a total of £300,000 in Broadway Sports Centre, formerly part of the demolished Broadway High School, in Sutton.
The site will be brought up to national standards for badminton and allow Sutton Badminton Club to use facilities from Monday to Thursday.
The grant from Badminton England will be used to fit a high-quality sprung wood floor and heating and ventilation system, and upgrade changing rooms.
Deputy council leader Barrie Grunewald said: “Working with local badminton clubs allows us to operate the sports hall far more economically. The community will be heavily involved in the ongoing management.”
From Friday to Sunday, sport and arts activities will be held for young people.
