A GROUP which represents Wirral’s churches is trying to stop a £6m casino being built in a seaside resort.
The Grosvenor complex is part of developer Neptune’s plans for Marine Point, the £60m redevelopment of New Brighton, which is nearing completion.
The scheme would create 120 jobs – but has already faced severe criticism from Wirral TUC and now faces a formal objection from Wirral Churches Together.
Wirral Council’s licensing committee will consider whether to allow the casino to open on June 22.
The Rev Arnold Dixon, of St Andrew’s Church, in New Brighton, a member of Wirral Churches Together, said they were concerned about the potential impact on vulnerable people of the casino, which he said was not publicised in the original Marine Point plans.
Rev Dixon said: “We put in the objection because we were a bit worried about vulnerable people who might get involved in something which could lead to a downward spiral.”
