WARRINGTON South MP David Mowatt urged other sports to follow rugby league in curbing homophobia.
He praised all Super League teams and their governing body for their three-year campaign.
The Conservative MP said: “Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people are welcome in the sport.
“Rugby league is at the forefront of this and an example of best practice.
“More sports bodies and clubs should follow this lead.” Mr Mowat tabled a cross-party Commons motion urging them to sign up to the Government’s anti-homophobia charter.
Equalities minister Lynn Featherstone said at a recent Commons reception: “The Government is committed to stamping out homophobia wherever it occurs, so I’m delighted to see rugby league working hard to tackle the problem.”
In December, 2009, ex-Wales captain Gareth Thomas revealed he is gay, saying: “I hope this starts a little snowball effect..
