St Helens canal
Police from Cheshire were called to reports of a body in the canal at Great Sankey on Saturday at around 11am.
Detective Inspector Jo Miller said the two men had been involved in an “altercation”.
She said: “At the time, there was a fishing competition going on at the canal and a football competition being held nearby.
“There was an altercation between two men and at this stage there was quite a lot of people around the area at the time and we would like anyone who may have been at the park to come forward.
“We would also like to hear from anyone who may know why this has happened.”
DI Miller added that the area was also popular with joggers and dog walkers, and appealed for them and anyone else who could help to assist them.
A post mortem was due to take place to establish the cause of Mr Morris’s death.
