Murder investigation after fisherman killed during St Helens canal angling competition

Police from Cheshire were called to   reports of a body in the canal at Great  Sankey on Saturday at around 11am.

Detective Inspector Jo Miller said  the two men had been involved in an  “altercation”.

She said: “At the time, there was a  fishing competition going on at the  canal and a football competition being  held nearby.

“There was an altercation between  two men and at this stage there was  quite a lot of people around the area at  the time and we would like anyone  who may have been at  the park to come forward.

“We would also like  to hear from anyone  who may know why  this has happened.”

DI Miller added  that the area was also  popular with joggers  and dog walkers, and appealed for  them and anyone else who could help  to assist them.

A post mortem was due to take  place to establish the cause of Mr Morris’s death.
