Murder investigation after fisherman killed during St Helens canal angling competition

A MAN was being questioned on suspicion of murder last night, after an  angler was allegedly pushed into a  canal during a fishing competition.

Police recovered the body of Harry  Morris, 57, from the St Helens canal,  in Great Sankey Valley Park, near  Warrington, on Saturday morning.

It is understood he was taking part  in a fishing competition when an  attacker pushed him off the bank and  reportedly held his head under the  water.

Mr Morris’s brother, Alan Morris,  59, said yesterday that other competitors chased a suspect who fled into  nearby woods.

A 40-year-old Widnes man was later  arrested on suspicion of murder. He  was still being questioned by Cheshire  police last night.

Mr Morris’s family – he is believed  to be a father-of-five – was too devastated to speak in detail about  what had happened.

At this stage, a motive for the  attack remained unclear.

The victim’s older brother,  Louis Morris, is the chairman of  Dallam and District Community  Angling Club, which organised  Saturday’s competition.

He spoke briefly to say the family was “devastated” by Harry’s  death.

He said: “It’s a complete shock.

“We’re waiting for the pathologist now and I’ve got to speak  to (Harry’s) wife, so I can’t say   anything about what happened.

“Harry was a normal, lovely  guy who loved his fishing. He has been going fishing for  30 years  and never missed a competition.”
