Groom in court accused of Peckforton castle fire

AN IDENTICAL twin property developer appeared in court accused of burning down Peckforton Castle on his wedding day.

Max Kay, 36, of Waylands Drive, Hunts Cross, appeared at South Cheshire Magistrates’ Court, in Crewe, yesterday, charged with arson with intent to destroy or damage property and to endanger life and arson reckless as to whether life is endangered.

The fire broke out in a wing of the historic building, near Tarporley, Cheshire, at around 5am on Sunday causing millions of pounds of damage.

At the short hearing Kay, wearing a suit jacket, white shirt and jeans, spoke only to confirm his name and address.

The court heard he was the groom from a wedding party which had been using the hotel at the time of the fire.

The father-of-two, who is believed to hail from London originally, was remanded in custody until July 26, when he is due to appear at Chester Crown Court.

Around 100 firefighters tackled the blaze at the historic country house hotel, a Grade I-listed 19th-century country house.
