HUNDREDS of patients worried about their metal hip implants attended a specially-arranged conference in Liverpool.
A panel of medical and legal experts provided free advice to clients affected by the worldwide recall of two hip replacement systems manufactured by DePuy.
Initially hailed as state-of-the-art technology, the implants have been found to be failing after just a few years, when they were expected to last for 10Šyears or more.
Studies revealed that a major problem was due to the metal surfaces of the implant wearing away, releasing particles that are absorbed into the blood causing secondary health problems.
The company is facing a potential multi-million pound payout to patients as more people come forward claiming damages.
Patients travelled from across the UK to attend the conference at the BT Convention Centre.
Among the speakers was Professor Peter Kay, president of the British Orthopaedic Association and an expert on hip replacement surgery.
Liverpool solicitor Lisa Lunt, a partner at law firm Gregory Abrams Davidson which arranged the conference, said it had been “a huge success.”
She added: “It was not just about us Špassing on medical and legalŠ advice to our clients, it was also a great opportunity for them to meet each other and to talk about and share their experiences.”
