WALLASEY MP Angela Eagle is spearheading a bid to force bankers to help young jobless people into work.
The Shadow Treasury Chief Secretary reckons that would create 100,000 youth jobs nationwide, 17,780 of them in Merseyside and the North West.
That would almost exactly match the 18,000 regional total of the Future Jobs Fund, axed last year by the Government.
She said: “We need to act now to stop another lost generation of young people.”
Her measure, in an amendment to the finance bill, would resurrect last year’s £3.5bn bankers’ bonus tax and plough the money directly into helping the 1m young people currently unemployed.
She said: “Putting young people on the dole is not just a waste of talent but a waste of money too.
“Failing to get Britain back to work fast enough is helping to push up the benefits bill.”
