Birkenhead parade to honour soldiers returning home from Afghanistan

HEROES returning from Afghanistan will be honoured by Wirral’s mayor tomorrow.

Cllr Moira McLaughlin will officially welcome back soldiers from 75 Engineer Regiment (Volunteers) after a six-month tour of duty in Afghanistan.

The Territorial Army soldiers, who are part of 107 Field Squadron (Birkenhead), will briefly parade around the historic Hamilton Square, in Birkenhead, at 10.30am, before 16 of the soldiers who have completed their service in Afghanistan will receive medals outside Birkenhead Town Hall.

Shortly afterwards, the mayor will host a reception in the town hall for the service personnel and their guests.

Also attending will be the Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside, Dame Lorna Muirhead, local MPs, councillors, former mayors and war veterans.

Cllr McLaughlin said she was delighted to be honouring the soldiers, adding: “I am delighted to honour our volunteer servicemen. I hope as many people can come out and line Hamilton Square in support.”
